Guardians Dominate Again

COVINGTON, LA- In yet another rain delayed game, John Paul the Great Academy (JPG) delivered a knockout performance over the Northshore Vultures, cruising to a 64–6 victory this Saturday evening in Covington.

From the opening kickoff, the Guardians wasted no time in seizing control of the contest. The Guardians erupted for 24 points in both the first and second quarters, building an insurmountable lead before halftime. Though they were held scoreless in the third, they closed the night strong with 16 more points in the fourth to seal a 64–6 victory.

The offense was nothing short of dominant, pounding out 256 rushing yards on just 18 carries—an eye-popping 14.2 yards per attempt. Junior running back Riley Lormand set the tone, piling up 54 yards on 8 carries and crossing the goal line three times. His backfield partner, quarterback Daniel Charpentier, proved just as dangerous, breaking loose for 81 yards on only 4 carries, highlighted by a 50-yard sprint, and adding two more scores. Meanwhile, junior Jonah Petitt delivered the game’s most explosive performance, racking up 83 rushing yards on 3 carries, adding 26 yards receiving, and finishing with 109 total yards and three touchdowns of his own.

Through the air, JPGA attempted only one pass, but it was all they needed. Charpentier completed a 26-yard strike for a touchdown, finishing the night with a perfect completion rate and a lofty quarterback rating of 177.1.

Coach Barrett Richard credits part of the running game success to the development of sophomore offensive tackles Jacob Angelle and Luke Cramer, “Two tackles have played really well. I’m super impressed. They’re both smart, smart young men.”

As productive as the offense has been, Coach Richard’s defense after the last two games may be an even better indicator of the program’s excellence this season.  Unlike the Guardian’s veer offense which at this point in the program’s history seems to operate with automatic system precision, the Guardian’s coaches and player have shown an ability to scheme, adapt, and, for the most part, shut down their opponents.

Saturday was no different as the unit smothered Northshore with three sacks—one each from Maximus Stewart, Dominic Cramer, and Luke Cramer—while also forcing multiple turnovers. Both Dominic Cramer and Jacques Odient pounced on fumbles to snuff out any chance of a Vultures rally.

Overall, Coach Richard pointed to improvement over last week’s performance, “Execution was pretty good, not as good as I would like, but better than the week before. So I’ll take that as a positive.” He credited the win to crisp assignment‑football: “guys doing their job… not freelancing”  Richard, though, restrains his praise, “We have been playing well, but we can be a much better football team.”

JPG, now 3–0 on the season, faces a winless Mount Olive Christian School next game.  Coach Richard sees Mount Olive, however, as a stronger and improved team with physical linemen that will require the Guardians to match their physicality and use sharp technique.   Kickoff is this Friday, August 29th, at 7:00 p.m. at Clark Field.
